Professional Lawyer Coaching and Mentoring Services

Law schools and firms teach attorneys how to analyze a case, apply law to facts, and practical skills such as taking depositions and oral argument. Less attention, however, is given to what is an outsized part of the job—communication, negotiation, resolution of disputes, and how to grow as an attorney and navigate the legal profession. Perspective fills this gap through tailor-made mentorship and coaching programs that blend theoretical knowledge and practical applications, all designed to make you a better attorney.

Our Perspective on Mentoring and Coaching

Perspective’s mentoring and coaching programs recognize that there is not a “one size fits all” approach to litigation, negotiation, resolution, and career success. We aim to empower attorneys with confidence in who they are and develop a style that will help them better navigate a case, advocate for their clients, and succeed as attorneys.

Mentoring
Critical to an attorney’s success is ensuring that they receive the proper support at all stages of their career, particularly the early stages. Yet, mentoring of new attorneys and associates rarely receives the necessary attention or resources. Even well-meaning law firms with mentor programs cannot avoid the inescapable realities that more senior attorneys are unavoidably distracted by work and associates may not find a person that they connect with or feel comfortable going to with all their questions. Attorneys outside the firm structure may not know who to turn to for guidance and advice. Having the comfort of knowing you have someone to turn to for support and guidance is invaluable to one’s career.

Coaching
Communication and negotiation are constants of the job; as an attorney, you are communicating and negotiating with opposing counsel, other attorneys, and clients. Indeed, convincing a client to rethink their case or a position can be the most challenging part of an attorney’s job. Equally constant are disputes, which range from the micro—e.g., discovery disputes—to the macro—e.g., settlement of the case. Successfully navigating and resolving these disputes is crucial to resolving a case—whether through settlement or continued litigation. Learning these skills early can accelerate an attorney’s growth and set them up for long-lasting success.

“The advancement of my legal career would not have happened without my mentors, men and women who taught me practical skills, to trust my style, and sometimes just listened. I have tried to “pay it forward” by providing such coaching and mentoring to those attorneys coming up behind me. Such relationships are always rewarding. ”
